Wellspring Singers

Music has been called the universal language of the soul. It can be an especially powerful way to soothe people at the end of life. Wellspring is a group of HVS volunteers and community members available to sing for patients, wherever they are living – in their homes, at bedsides, or in Addison County community care homes. Specific favorite or comfort songs can be requested for an individual patient; Wellspring will make every effort to learn and perform the piece. Patients and others sometimes join in the singing or a patient may simply relax into the melodies as Wellspring offers its gift of music. When a patient is nearing death, the singers may help the patient in their passage by “singing them over.”

Music can have a profound effect on patients and their loved ones as they face the end of life.  Amoung its many benefits, music can:

  • Invite a deep sense of relaxation, inner calm and promote sleep
  • Decrease anxiety and fearfulness
  • Reduce pain, nausea and general discomfort
  • Provide diversion and pleasure
  • Promote a sense of connectedness with others through a shared experience
  • Encourage reflection, meditation and spiritual contemplation
  • Kindle nostalgic memories and life review
  • Stimulate communication between patient and family members
  • Express a broad range of feelings
  • Convey personal and cultural identity

Wellspring is a group of HVS volunteers and community members who sing for hospice patients wherever they live in Addison County.  We sing beautiful songs, often in 3 or 4 part harmony, as well as specially requested songs.  Patients and family members may join in the singing or simply relax into the melodies as Wellspring offers its gift of music.  When a patient is nearing death, the singers provide a vigil sing of very quiet, peaceful songs.
