Hospice Volunteer Training

HVS volunteers must complete a certified ten-week, 30 hour training before they participate in patient care. This training covers such topics as the philosophy of hospice, personal death awareness, communication skills, physical and comfort care, psychosocial issues of the dying process, spiritual dynamics, caring for the dead and bereavement issues. Our staff matches volunteers with hospice patients and continues to supervise and support both volunteers and patients throughout their time together.

Volunteers who have completed similar certified training at other hospice organizations, may be eligible to volunteer with patients and families with an abbreviated training, only after thorough evaluation of their certification process and on a case by case basis. The integrity of our training and volunteer program is paramount to the patients we serve.
